Amrita Takes Off on the Technological Runway

The Information Age: a phase in the history of the world where speed is the watchword for everything. The age when not just the theory of "survival of the fittest" applies, but also the "survival of the swiftest." Fortunes are won by how fast a company comes up with solutions—lives hang on new medical cures for the age old diseases plaguing humanity.

In such a fast moving world, Education is also moving fast. Each passing day sees
a new discovery, a new invention. The discovery of the computers, the internet, integrated chips, more planets, more diseases. History is created with each passing day. And as the universe expands, so does the syllabi of school children.

The concepts and theories a child has to learn at school have simply tripled in a
span of 20 years. The simple fact is that each child’s mind is literally racing against the information explosion.

Given this circumstance, expecting students to learn more in the same amount of time, without any change in the methodology and individualization of instruction, would be grossly unfair and unrealistic. Identifying the need for new training techniques and the unique grasping capacity of each child, Amrita has introduced advances in technology and advances to the routines of classroom teaching.

Amrita Learning is one such advance. Amrita Learning is a customized software
built specially on the NCERT syllabus for students from standard I till standard VIII, devised and developed in collaboration with Amrita University, also managed by
Mata Amritanandamayi Math, Kerala.

Children differ in ways ranging from their background to their learning capacity.
The aim of Amrita Learning is to provide a comprehensive solution that would allow children to learn from the level they stand. Often it so happens in classrooms that even if the teachers want to dwell more on a concept, constraints of time do not allow them to do so. So also is the students learning time restricted by the school timings and by the instructors availability.

This academic year of 2008-09, chosen Amrita Vidyalayms introduced Amrita Learning to their schools. In addition to the usual class hours, students work on the software to reinforce their class room learning. The advantage is that students can access the software from the convenience of their home also via internet, without having to depend on tutors or the school timings.

In the E-learning labs....

In a survey conducted, it was found that children with an average performance level performed as well as the top 10 percent of their class when provided with visual and interactive learning aids. Amrita endeavors to instill in its children the self-confidence that sprouts from deep roots of knowledge. Education is not making a child learn—it is motivating a child to want to learn. Ever ready to travel the extra mile for its students, Amrita hopes this effort would also help in generating the much needed thirst for knowledge.
