Plant for the Planet: World Environment Day, 2008

Technology, in its wake, has been expanding the limits of human achievement further and further. In just thirty years technological advancements have totally changed the way human beings spend their lives. It is with wonder that one looks back and thinks, "How did we ever get along without the internet, the refrigerator, the washing machine and yes, my cell phone…?" Today life is fast, the image of a women drawing water from a well brings the feeling of a historical period some 40 years back, when the same was routine.

AV - Palakkad celebrates World Environment Day 2008.

The human race has moved ahead so much, in such a short period of time, that it can be safely said it has been a time of technological explosion. Medicine, Space Exploration, Computing, Power—we have moved ahead in every sphere.

And yes, when we were busy on the technological highway, the summer’s seem to get just hotter and hotter—heavy water taxes, and of course the frequent power cuts, are all the symptoms of global warming.

The seasonal changes, rise in temperatures, the shrinking biodiversity and animals on the brink of extinction are a stark reminder that something is wrong with our planet earth.

We owe a lot to the world we live in. That is why it becomes important to save the earth in any way we can.

So to give our Mother Earth a chance, Amrita observes and celebrates June 5th of each year, World Environment Day. The day's events are organized with a view of instilling in the students the motto, "Save today and Survive tomorrow."

The more effort we put into attaining something, the dearer the thing becomes to us. Hence the students are encouraged to plant one sapling each and tend to it. The thrill of having the yield of their own tree or plant, in their hands, becomes motivation enough for them to make this a practice in the future also.
