Amrita Vidyalayam Shornur, is a primary level school catering to students till class II following the NCERT syllabus.

Amrita always strives to get the best possible facilities and periodically reviews its approach in teaching. In this quest for perfection, we have introduced the Phonics Laboratory, this year of 2008-09, wherein the children are trained in the art of pronunciation. In learning any foreign language, there is always the inevitable threat of the local accent creeping into the pronunciation. This Phonics Lab lays a firm foundation for the language, with strong basics in diction, spelling and articulation at the lower class levels. This makes the children immune to local language influences, irrespective of the place they travel to and the time they spend there.

This program is comprised of a variety of engaging activities which are customized to match each child's specific needs. A clever combination of spoken and printed words, pictures and graphics keep the children engrossed in each session. Interactive exercises guide the child from one level to the next as the child hits the right pronunciation and simultaneously help in increasing the child’s confidence.

While keeping the children ahead of their peers academically, AV Shornur also gives utmost importance to making the children gain an understanding and appreciation of India’s rich culture. Observations of special days of thanksgiving to parents, teachers, the environment, country and more, are held so that children know the value and importance of the gifts they have been showered with. Regular retreats of fun that serve to highlight the different ways of life abounding in India today and throughout its history are part and parcel of life at Amrita.

Art and music stimulate a totally different part of a student's intellect and imagination. Instruction in playing musical instruments of their choice, and vocal music training, is provided to the students. Students can also choose hobbies ranging from dance, music, art, drama and more. Training for all of these is provided under the one roof of Amrita.

Putting into use the adage"catching them young", the children are, even at this young age, given small responsibilities in organizing functions, receiving guests, arranging flowers and more. The teachers instruct and simultaneously become the child’s ally in achieving these life skills. The teacher teaches, and also plays with the kids, and becomes a natural counselor to them, laying the groundwork for a lasting and sweet relationship.

Amrita Vidyalayam Shornur celebrated its Annual Day for the year 2007-08. The tiny tots, with hardly any one of them above 8 years, were seen hustling here and there, putting on their make up, costumes and going through the steps once more before their maiden performance.

It was a sweet performance punctuated with innocence and enthusiasm. For the audience watching, the show gave the much needed respite from the fast and competitive world. It was an evening that reminded each one in the audience of the child within their own heart.
